FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Tool Making

Answers to the most important questions about tool design, manufacturing and maintenance.

We manufacture injection moulds in various configurations — from simple single-cavity tools to multi-cavity tools to complex tools with slides, core pulls and hot runner systems. Prototype tools for sampling and small series are also part of our service range.

Depending on the requirements, we use different tool steels. For prototype tools, we use aluminium or soft steels (e.g. 1.2312). For series tools, hardened steels such as 1.2343, 1.2344 or 1.2738 are used, which ensure tool lives of several hundred thousand shots.

Our process begins with the analysis of your CAD data and a feasibility assessment. We then create the tool concept including gate system, cooling and demoulding strategy. After design approval, CNC machining, EDM, assembly and sampling follow. You receive initial sample inspection reports for approval.

The delivery time depends on the complexity of the tool. We realise simple prototype tools in 2–4 weeks, standard series tools in 6–10 weeks and highly complex tools with slides or hot runner systems in 10–14 weeks. After order receipt, you receive a binding schedule.

Yes, regular tool maintenance is essential for consistent part quality and long tool life. We offer scheduled maintenance, wear part replacement, repairs and also the overhaul of third-party tools. Our maintenance service includes cleaning, inspection of all functional surfaces and documentation.

Our machine park enables the manufacture of tools for clamping forces up to 300 tonnes. The maximum tool size depends on the respective injection moulding machine. For larger projects, we work with proven partners to cover demanding tool dimensions as well.

Quality assurance starts with us already in design with simulation and fill studies. During manufacturing, CNC machines with the highest repeatability are used. Every tool undergoes sampling with an initial sample inspection report. Dimensional inspections are carried out on our 3D coordinate measuring machine.

We process all common CAD formats, including STEP, IGES, Parasolid, SolidWorks, CATIA and NX. Ideally, we receive 3D volume data in STEP format (AP214). If only 2D drawings are available, we create the 3D design based on these.

Yes, subsequent tool changes are possible in many cases. Typical changes include dimensional corrections, gate modifications or the addition of sink mark corrections. Steel can be subsequently removed by EDM or milling, or added by welding and post-processing. We assess the feasibility and create a quote.

Tool wear is a natural process that we control through regular maintenance. In cases of advanced wear, inserts can be reworked or replaced without having to manufacture the entire tool anew. We document the tool condition and recommend overhaul measures in good time.
